About the Stuart Hall Award

The Stuart Hall Award was created in 2015 to honor lifetime achievement in cultural studies. With the approval of his family, the award is named for Stuart Hall (1932-2014), one of the leading figures in the international growth of cultural studies from the 1960s onward.

The honoree should be a well-recognized scholar in the field with a clear trajectory in cultural studies, who has made all-around contributions to teaching, research, advocacy, and/or networking. With this primary criterion, recipients for the award are chosen every two years by the ACS Board. The Board reserves the right to not confer an award in years when it deems that no suitable nominees exist.

The first Stuart Hall Award was presented to Meaghan Morris in 2016 at the Sydney Crossroads in Cultural Studies conference.

The second Stuart Hall Award was presented to Lawrence Grossberg in 2018 at the Shanghai Crossroads in Cultural Studies conference.

Policy on the selection of candidates for the Stuart Hall Award

Criteria for the nomination and selection of candidates

The Award is set up to honour scholars in the field for their lifetime achievements in cultural studies. The Award is normally announced at the Crossroads Conference held every two years in different locations of the global scholarly community.

  1. The nominated candidate should be a well-recognized scholar in the field with a clear trajectory in Cultural Studies, who has made all-round contributions to teaching, research, advocacy and/or networking.
  2. The selected candidate for the Award will preferably be someone who has contributed to the work of the ACS.

The nomination and selection process

The nomination and selection process will be conducted by and within the Board.

All Board members are eligible to make nominations. The process will normally take place approximately 10 to 12 months before the date of a scheduled Crossroads Conference. A nomination is valid when it is made by a proposer who is a Board member, and seconded by two other Board members. Each nomination will consist of a brief statement and an outline profile of the nominee. After all nominations are received, a discussion will take place in the Board. Decision by the Board will then be made by a majority vote. The Award may not be offered in a certain year when the Board so decides. Members of the current Board are not eligible to be nominated for the Award.
