Crossroads in Cultural Studies - CALL FOR HOSTS: 2014

Feb 18, 09:10 PM

The Association for Cultural Studies (ACS) seeks proposals from individuals and institutions interested in hosting the biennial “Crossroads in Cultural Studies” conference in 2014.

Founded in 2002, the Association for Cultural Studies (ACS) aims at forming and promoting an effective worldwide community of cultural studies. It is intended as a tool for building strong interdisciplinary and transnational connections by offering meaningful meeting places for the great diversity of committed scholars in this field. The ACS helps establish, maintain and strengthen contacts between cultural studies scholars and workers across different disciplines and within as well as between the different countries and regions of the world, by spreading information and encouraging collaborative work, facilitating the creation and linking of local, national and regional cultural studies groups.

The most important event ACS organizes to achieve these objectives is the Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conferences, which were started in 1996 in Tampere, Finland. Although cultural studies was becoming increasingly international and multi-centered – or rather centerless because of its virtual nature – cultural studies people had scarce opportunities to see each other, to exchange ideas and to socialize. The Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conferences were designed to fill this gap in the cultural studies community. The Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conferences are not organized around specific themes. Subthemes inform plenary and spotlight sessions as well as individual panels.

The 2012 Crossroads conference will be held in Paris, France. Previous locations include:
• Tampere, Finland
• Birmingham, England
• Urbana, Illinois, USA
• Istanbul, Turkey
• Kingston, Jamaica
• Lingnan, Hong Kong

Proposals should address the following details:
• Concept / vision for the conference (including its contribution to regional and global development of cultural studies)
• Likely institutional support (financial, facilities, labor)
• Description of the main conference venue(s)
• Conference activities / format (including ancillary activities, such as tours, receptions, etc.)
• Anticipated members of planning and program committees
• Schedule of important dates (for the overall planning of the conference, publicity, CFPs, and the actual conference dates)
• Description of local facilities for travel / lodging / meals (airports, shuttle buses, hotels, dorms, restaurants, catering, etc.)
• Anticipated budget
The overall proposal should demonstrate sufficient facilities and support for at least 500 attendees for a span of 4-5 days.

Please direct any inquiries to:
The Administrative Secretary
info@cultstud.org
Proposals should be submitted to info@cultstud.org by 29 February 2012.

ASSISTANCE SCHEME FOR ACS CROSSROADS 2012, PARIS

Nov 29, 02:08 PM

In collaboration with the ACS Crossroads 2012 Organising Committee, the Association for Cultural Studies will offer a small number of grants to assist participants from ACS under-represented regions with travel, accommodation or registration expenses.

These funds are limited and we have to spend them with care. Full support cannot usually be provided and travel assistance takes the form of a reimbursement. Accommodation is simple and may be shared. Successful applicants are expected not only to deliver their papers but to participate fully in the rest of the conference. Support may be withdrawn if these conditions are not met.

The primary eligible ACS regions are: Africa; Asia (and Middle East); the Caribbean; Eastern and Southern Europe (including Turkey); Latin and South America. Individual eligibility is based on place of residence and working situation, not nationality or country of origin.

Only candidates who join ACS and have a paper accepted to ACS Crossroads 2012 may apply for support. The support selection process will be based on the merits of the case for assistance as well as the paper proposal. The selection Committee reserves the right to prioritize the allocation of funds on the basis of need.

All applications MUST include:

1) a statement of no more than 1–2 pages explaining the reasons for your request and giving details of the kind of support (airfare? accommodation? registration?) and the amount requested (e.g. airfare, USD XXX).
2) a copy of the paper proposal accepted for Crossroads
3) a brief (1–2 page) curriculum vitae.

Without this information we cannot assess your application.

ADDRESS FOR APPLICATIONS
Applications must be sent as an RTF/PDF attachment to the Administrative Secretary, Ms Sari Miettinen at: info@cultstud.org

NB: This is the ONLY address for ACS assistance requests. The conference organizers in Paris cannot take responsibility for forwarding assistance applications to ACS.
